45032 (2025). Arena Williams to the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs: Does the Minister agree with Newstalk ZB's Kerre Woodham who asked, in response to the surcharge ban announcement, "Why didn't the Government go after the Ticketmasters, and the Air New Zealands, and the hotels of this world that charge processing fees and service fees"?
Hon Scott Simpson: The Government has initially targeted the ban towards in-person payments, as these are easier and less complicated to administer. The Retail Payments (Ban on Surcharges) Amendment Bill, however, allows for the ban to be extended to other areas, such as online payments and other card types as needed.
