44801 (2025). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Health: Is it important to him that health practitioner regulations protect patient safety and if so, does he think health professionals should play a primary role or a lesser role in setting health practitioner regulations?
Hon Simeon Brown: Yes, it is critical that health-workforce regulation protects clinical safety for patients, and that is a priority for our Government as we focus on putting patients first and ensuring all New Zealanders have access to timely, quality healthcare. Responsibility for setting clinical standards and scopes of practice will always remain with the regulatory authorities, who will continue to be responsible for maintaining clinical safety.
