44706 (2024). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: Does the Minister stand by his statement made to the Estimates Hearing 18 June 2024 that "we are starting to see a trend downwards, in terms of Māori in our corrections system"; if so, what information has he seen to show that?
Hon Mark Mitchell: Yes. As at 31 May 2024, the number of Māori in prison had reduced by 6 percent since its peak in March 2018. The imprisonment rate for Māori has also seen a 18 percent reduction in the same period.
