44582 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How many Kāinga Ora tenants, if any, were asked in 2024/25 to voluntarily give up their homes so they could be sold and how many of those homes are currently vacant or have been sold?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that where Kāinga Ora requires a tenant to move out of the property they are currently renting for business reasons, they are placed on the Kāinga Ora Business Initiated Transfer (BIT) Register. A BIT can be triggered for a range of reasons, including to enable a redevelopment project, to divest a home or relocate a household when a lease expires on a privately owned home in the lease portfolio, or address underutilisation. For the financial year 2024/25, there are 237 BITS recorded in Kāinga Ora systems for the reason of divestment. As at 31 August 2025, 37 of those properties have been sold, one occupied, one demolished and 198 were removed from service pending divestment.
