Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What was the average cost per square metre of houses built by Kāinga Ora in each the past three financial years and how, if at all, is he monitoring progress toward his government’s goal of getting the cost of Kāinga Ora homes down to around $2,500 or $3,000 per square metre?

Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities advises me that it is regularly tracking build costs per square metre as part of its quarterly Performance Scorecard, which is publicly available here: https://kaingaora.govt.nz/en_NZ/publications/tracking-our-performance/ In FY2022/23, the build cost per gross floor area for home typologies was $3,433, in FY2023/24 it was $3,473 and in FY2024/25 it was $3,345 (excl. GST).
