44311 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: What are all of the right places to build new social housing that he was referring to when he said, the government will continue to try and change the system in a way that “is centred around building the right houses, in the right places” and why are each of those places the right place?

Hon Chris Bishop: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has deliberately allocated houses to regions based on their identified housing need. For example, by looking at the regional social housing need and emergency housing usage. The system change included new approaches to partnering with Community Housing Providers (CHPs). Five strategic partners were selected to deliver more effectively at scale, with nearly half of the 1,500 places funded through Budget 2024 allocated to them in Auckland, Hamilton and surrounds, Tauranga, Porirua and Nelson-Tasman. In addition, the Ministry is supporting two community-led approaches to deliver social housing in the Hawke’s Bay and Rotorua.
