44212 (2024). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What specific innovations are being implemented by contractors to ensure that temporary pothole repairs last longer before a permanent reseal can take place?
Hon Simeon Brown: Part of the current solution involves the use of new treatments, such as pre-fabricated mats. The key benefit is that the mat has the same properties as the surrounding sealed road and bridges the pothole, so acts as a crack seal as well as a finished surface. This stops water getting into the road pavement around the repaired pothole. The best way to compact these is with truck tyres, which act the same way as a rubber tyred roller used for reseals.
