Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister for Children: Further to the answer to Written Parliamentary Question 39177 (2024) how will young people and their families be provided with information about the pilot military-style academy when developing a proposed sentencing plan, and have a choice to participate, when they are already convicted and in youth justice facilities?

Hon Karen Chhour: Young people considered for participation in the Military-Style Academy Pilot have been on remand in a Youth Justice Residence (pending sentencing outcomes) at the time of referral. Young people and their families were provided with information about the pilot and given the choice to participate at Family Group Conferences or during family engagement in the pre-sentencing process. Following agreement, a recommendation is made to the Youth Court that the pilot be included in a Supervision with Residence Order.
