Hon Judith Collins: The Attorney-General cannot quantify the “total cost of prosecuting” Danny and Roberto Jaz. Total costs would include cost information Crown Law does not hold, such as associated Police and Ministry of Justice costs. The Attorney-General also cannot provide the “total costs” of running the Crown prosecution of the Jaz brothers. The Attorney can only provide information on some of the costs paid by Crown Law for that prosecution and its associated appeals. This is because Crown prosecutions are bulk funded, rather than funded as individual cases. However, the exceptional nature of the Jaz prosecution means that there were some identifiable costs paid separately and on a special basis. These identifiable costs are: • $143,987 was paid to external counsel who supported the office of the Timaru Crown Solicitor with the prosecution; • $122,193.27 was paid to Timaru Crown Solicitor • $18,050.69 was paid to external counsel and $2,990.00 to the Timaru Crown Solicitor for their work on appeals against conviction and sentence; • $3,997.40 was spent on other disbursements for all the appeals.
