43543 (2025). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Local Government: What reports, if any, has he received on proposals for councils to amalgamate and what councils, if any, were considered in those reports?

Hon Simon Watts: I received an aide memoire on 16 April 2025 (Online meeting with Mayor Rob Scott, Southland District Council, 22 April 2025), which included information on Southland District Council’s re-organisation proposal submitted to the Local Government Commission (Commission) in February 2025. The reorganisation proposal impacts Gore District Council, Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council and Southland Regional Council. Reference to the non-binding referenda on amalgamation in Porirua and Hutt City was included in the Local Government Status Report for the week ending 7 August 2025.
