43161 (2025). Steve Abel to the Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations: Why does the Te Pire Whakahoki a Kororipo Pā – Kororipo Pā Vesting Bill not provide Ngāti Rēhia with first right of refusal to purchase the surrounding land if the Crown chooses to dispose of it in future?
Hon Paul Goldsmith: The vesting of Kororipo Pā in Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia Trust is on-account of a future comprehensive Ngāpuhi Treaty settlement. Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia Trust represent Ngāti Rēhia, who intend to hold the site as kaitiaki on behalf of Ngāpuhi. Once Kororipo Pā is vested in Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rēhia Trust they will own the site. This makes a right of first refusal over the pā unnecessary. The adjacent land may be the subject of future negotiations with mandated group/s towards the settlement of historical Treaty of Waitangi claims. This would include any agreements regarding rights of first refusal for the land adjacent to the pā.
