43156 (2025). Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan to the Minister of Conservation: Why was South Island kākā Charlie specifically chosen for the captive breed-for-release programme in Dunedin Botanic Garden Aviary?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised that Charlie was transferred to the Dunedin Botanic Garden Aviary, as part of the South Island kākā breed-for-release programme, to enable her to be a foster parent if the opportunity arose. Charlie is considered an excellent foster mother, with a record of successfully fostering eggs and raising chicks from kākā who were inexperienced or otherwise less-successful parents.
