43138 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What operational changes, if any, are being considered to increase remand prisoners’ access to services and programmes during the month of August?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that following the drawdown of tagged contingency funding to extend rehabilitative services to people on remand after 1 July 2025 as provided for under Budget 2024, and in line with the Coalition Government’s Q3 Action Plan, Corrections will start delivery of offence-focused rehabilitation services to remand convicted prisoners by 30 September 2025. I am further advised that Corrections has begun extending the delivery of non-offence-focused rehabilitative services in remand. A small cohort of remand prisoners has begun a skills-based programme focused on managing thinking, emotions and whānau at one prison. Additionally, Corrections has completed procurement for a psycho-educational service in remand that builds awareness of the impacts of alcohol and other drugs for two prisons, with delivery planned to begin in the coming weeks.
