42987 (2024). Hon Dr Ayesha Verrall to the Minister of Finance: How many vacant positions have been disestablished, if any, in each of the Minister’s departments, ministries and agencies, if any, between 27 November 2023 and 10 July 2024?

Hon Nicola Willis: Between December 2023 and 30 June 2024, the Treasury undertook a managed headcount reduction including centralisation of new and existing vacancies as a result of attrition, ending fixed term roles and removing vacancies. The Treasury reduced the total number of full time equivalent employees from 650 to 600, at 30 June 2024. RBNZ has not been asked to identify savings resulting from the Government’s directive to reduce expenditure in the public service due to its unique funding arrangements. RBNZ funding levels are determined through a five-year funding agreement. The approach to the next agreement is the subject of discussion between RBNZ and the Minister of Finance with no final decisions having been made.
