42676 (2025). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Corrections: How many people in prison, if any, have indicated they are Māori under their first, second, third and fourth preferences for ethnicity, broken down by preference, and gender?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections does not decide who is in prison and who is in the community – this is a matter for the courts and New Zealand Parole Board. Corrections is committed to delivering improved outcomes with and for Māori, addressing the overrepresentation of Māori in the corrections system, and reducing reoffending. I refer the member to the attached table which contains the number of people in prison who have reported their ethnicity as Māori, broken down by order of Māori ethnicity preference and gender, as at 31 August 2025.
