42674 (2025). Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan to the Minister of Conservation: How long is Charlie expected to remain at the Dunedin Botanic Garden Aviary, and what criteria will determine any future relocation?

Hon Tama Potaka: I am advised that there are no plans to move Charlie the South Island kākā from the Dunedin Botanic Garden Aviary. An independent welfare assessment, commissioned by the Department of Conservation, has recommended Charlie remain at the Aviary, where she is being well cared for, to provide stability and best support her welfare. Decisions to move individual birds are made based on welfare considerations and captive breeding programme objectives.
