42042 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: What proportion of Mt Eden prisoners were Māori and Pacific as at 31 July 2025?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that as at 31 July 2025, 43% of prisoners at Mt Eden Corrections Facility identified as Māori and 23% identified as Pacific Peoples. I am further advised that all ethnicity information is self-reported by prisoners upon their reception at prison and Corrections does not attempt to verify or confirm a person’s ethnicity. Furthermore, prisoners are able to identify with multiple ethnicities. The information provided is based on their primary ethnicity.
