40721 (2025). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister of Education: How many secondary school teachers, if any, have left the profession in the past 12 months?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) that the numbers of secondary teachers leaving the profession are reported on Education Counts at https://www.educationcounts.govt.nz/statistics/teacher-turnover. The latest reported figures are for 2023. 1,900 teachers left the profession in that year. The Teacher Demand and Supply Planning Projection released in February 2025 estimates that around 1,800 secondary teachers are expected to leave the sector each year from 2025 to 2027. The model the Ministry uses shows a similar level for 2024 of 1,800. This is a similar leaving rate to the 2021-2023 period, despite currently having more teachers in the system.
