40720 (2025). Debbie Ngarewa-Packer to the Minister of Education: Is the Government aware of the average class sizes across secondary schools, if yes, what consultation, if any, has it undertaken with teachers' unions about the impact of class sizes and workloads on teacher wellbeing?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) that it does not collect information on class sizes. Schools receive entitlement staffing from the Ministry based on the number and year level of students, which they use to employ teaching staff. Schools are responsible for making decisions around how they use their staffing across the school, including class sizes.
