40676 (2025). Hon Rachel Brooking to the Minister for the Environment: What consultation, if any, did she undertake with stakeholders in New Zealand prior to the international treaty on plastic pollution negotiations in Geneva?

Hon Penny Simmonds: Ministry for the Environment (Ministry) officials engaged with the Tangata Whenua Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, The Scientists Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty, and Plastics NZ prior to attending the negotiations in Geneva. Officials also held a stakeholder roundtable discussion in July, where Ministry officials heard the views and perspectives of a variety of stakeholders including industry representatives, scientists, and environmental Non-Governmental Organisation representatives. These views provided valuable input for the New Zealand delegation in their preparations for the negotiations in Geneva.
