40556 (2026). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Tertiary Education: How much research funding, if any, was committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2025?

Hon Penny Simmonds: I am advised by the Tertiary Education Commission that $1,195,808 was committed to Wānanga or kaupapa Māori research in 2025, allocated through the Performance Based Research Fund. From 2023, the Wānanga Research Capability fund was replaced with the Nga Whare Wananga fund that provides up to $24 million ($8 million per Wānanga) to be committed towards research capability, operational needs and aspirations of Wānanga.
