40545 (2026). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: Did the Minister find it acceptable that in PISA 2022, which was published in December 2023, that only 68% of New Zealand students felt that they belong at school; and, if not, what did she do to address this and, following the release of PISA 2025, did students' sense of belonging improve?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am more concerned with the finding that the long term decline of maths results has accumulated to a total loss of more than two years of learning loss from 2003 to 2025. It is hard to have a sense of belonging when students are so far behind curriculum expectations. This is also my answer to Written Parliamentary Question 40546 (2026).
