40212 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: In response to Reply 38766 (2025), what evidence, if any, has the Minister received that shows that Structured Mathematics will raise achievement for Māori students?

Hon Erica Stanford: As stated in my response to written parliamentary question 38766 (2025), the structured approach to maths aligns with recommendations made by the Royal Society Te Aparangi, based on a synthesis of both New Zealand and international evidence. The report specifically addresses Māori achievement. It identifies Māori students as overrepresented among lower achievers and recommends actions to raise achievement for all students, including developing a clear sequence of learning and strengthening teachers’ knowledge of evidence-based teaching practice.
