40128 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: What expectations, if any, does the Minister have of the Ministerial Advisory Group regarding Te Tiriti o Waitangi as they advise on the writing of the subject English curricula?
Hon Erica Stanford: I required the Ministerial Advisory Group to act in accordance with the agreed Terms of Reference that underpinned their work. I made it clear to members that my clear focus was on lifting student achievement and closing the equity gap.
The Ministerial Advisory Group’s Terms of References outlined that ‘The Group’s advice should be based on consideration of:
• approaches in other jurisdictions
• the evidence-base
• meeting the needs of diverse students and supporting their wellbeing, presence,
participation and progress
• lessons from New Zealand's prior efforts to support teachers to focus on progression
• overall manageability of teaching expectations and the practicality of teachers being able to design programmes that provide sufficient depth on the learning that matters most
• schools’ obligations per the Education and Training Act 2020 including in relation to The Treaty of Waitangi | Te Tiriti of Waitangi.’
The Ministerial Advisory Group was disestablished on 20 June 2024
