40125 (2024). Hon Willow-Jean Prime to the Minister of Education: Does the Minister consider it important that the subject English curricula is written in a way that enables Māori students to improve their educational outcomes and that this requires upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi?

Hon Erica Stanford: It is of the utmost importance to me to lift the achievement of all students, including tamariki and rangatahi Māori, and to close the persistent equity gap in student achievement. For this reason, I have announced six key education priorities including the development of a knowledge-rich, progression-based curriculum that clearly states what students should be learning in each year of their schooling. This work is being undertaken in both English (New Zealand Curriculum) and Te Reo Māori (Te Marautanga o Aotearoa). Upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi by delivering equitable outcomes for Māori students is a key reason that I have tasked the Ministry with improving our curriculum, providing consistent modes of assessment, implementing evidence-based pedagogy, developing the workforce of the future, strengthening our learning support system and using data and evidence to make decisions.
