40123 (2024). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What evidence, if any, has the Minister seen that supports his claim that increasing the price of vehicles by approximately $5000 would lead to the Clean Car Standard not being achieved?

Hon Simeon Brown: I have been advised by the Ministry of Transport that the previous government's targets would be unachievable for industry to meet and would not deliver the gross emissions reduction that were intended to be achieved from the Standard. Under the previous government's targets, more importers would likely pay charges, rather than increase the supply of lower emissions vehicles. I have also been advised that the flow-through of these charges into higher vehicle prices would encourage consumers to hold onto their existing higher emitting vehicles for longer.
