40105 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: What are the processes, if any, to achieve successful curriculum implementation ensuring buy-in and enthusiasm among end uses with English and Mathematic curriculum changes?
Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) that in strengthening the refreshed English and mathematics and statistics learning areas, the Ministry has intentionally built in opportunities for consultation with the sector. The first engagement phase for these strengthened materials will be in Term 3, 2024, when the draft English Years 0-6 learning area is released for use and feedback, before it is implemented at the beginning of 2025. The draft English Years 7-13 learning area, and mathematics and statistics learning areas, will be released for use and feedback in Term 4, 2024, before it is implemented at the beginning of 2026. This will allow schools to get a feel for, and understanding of, the materials before they must be used. This is especially the case for the English Years 7-13, and mathematics and statistics learning areas, as schools will have an entire year to familiarise themselves with the materials before implementation. The Ministry is in the process of developing an implementation plan for the roll out of the strengthened curriculum materials. Engagement with the sector will allow the Ministry to continuously refine and tailor the plan to meet the sector’s needs. The Ministry will engage proactively with the sector, including providing accompanying supports to ensure they understand the new approaches and content and how to use the materials, in order to be ready for implementation.
