40062 (2024). Camilla Belich to the Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery: Further to the Minister's answer to question 38294 (2024): what administrative matters, if any, has Catherine Wedd assisted the Minister with?
Hon Mark Mitchell: The severe weather events of early 2023 had a major impact on the Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti regions. The recovery from these events is led by local councils, with support from central government.
To support the recovery in these regions, and to assist me in my role of Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery, the Prime Minister appointed the three local Members of Parliament for these areas as Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPS).
The PPS work to build relationships with local councils and businesses to support cyclone recovery. They work within their community, helping constituents, including with cyclone recovery matters. The role of the PPS doesn’t involve me requesting they undertake specific administrative type duties.
To support their work, I regularly meet with the PPS and provide them with reports on recovery progress. From time to time, I will be in contact with a PPS on a particular matter, this includes keeping me informed on local matters they believe I need to be aware of.
