39792 (2024). Tamatha Paul to the Minister of Police: What specific action do the police take to support neurodiverse officers, if any?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that while undergoing training, recruits are provided assistance, for example with readers/writers if required. An Autism recruitment programme has been run within Police. While focussed on a particular work group, at an organisational level this has continued to introduce and grow organisational awareness regarding neurodiversity, including interest and contact from neurodiverse members. For current serving officers Police’s Wellness Services provide advice and guidance appropriate to an individual’s type of neurodiversity. This may include professional support via a Wellness Advisor, EAP or a Police contracted psychologist. Platforms, including Viva Engage are also available and has ‘The Brain Space’, a neuro network where articles, points of view and comradery is shared. Police also has representation on the newly formed Neurodiversity Public Sector Governance Group, with involvement in the development of a five-year strategy.
