39714 (2024). Hon Jan Tinetti to the Minister of Education: What will the phonics check be for children in their first year of schooling?

Hon Erica Stanford: I am advised by the Ministry of Education that the Phonics Check will be based on the United Kingdom Phonics Screening Check, which will be adapted for use in New Zealand. It will include 20 real words and 20 pseudo words, and will include tasks that assess students' ability to hear and distinguish the correct use of sounds. It will be trialed in Terms 3 and 4 for use at the beginning of 2025.
