39677 (2026). Tangi Utikere to the Minister for Rail: What assessment, if any, has been made of the additional heavy vehicle movements on State Highway 1 attributable to road-bridging of Cook Strait rail freight, and what is the estimated additional road maintenance cost?

Rt Hon Winston Peters: Rail freight is loaded from trains onto trailers at KiwiRail’s CT sites in Wellington and Picton, which are both close to or part of the ferry terminals. This freight does not travel on SH1.
