39537 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister for Māori Development: What were the planned meetings/activities described in the Hon Tama Potaka’s approval submission for his travel to Hawaiʻi, if any, including their stated objectives, and the officials proposed to accompany him?
Hon Tama Potaka: The proposed meetings and activities for Hawai'i in my approval submission were:
Director of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Chair of the Hawai’ian Homes Commission - Diplomacy and discussions on different approaches to government administration and oversight of indigenous land for residential, agricultural and commercial enterprise purposes.
Office of Hawai’ian Affairs including meeting with Kaiali’i Kahele (Chair and Hawaiʻi Island Trustee) - Diplomacy and Māori development, conservation and housing matters
Hawaiian State Government (HSG) and University of Hawai’i at Mānoa - Meeting with lead Government agency and technical experts at the University to discuss BioInvest and on New Zealand’s approach to how we determine biodiversity and conservation needs in order to achieve better outcomes
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and Diamond Head State Monument - Conservation interests and environmental crisis management
I proposed that my Ministerial Advisor would accompany me for all of the meetings.
