39466 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Corrections: What is the imprisonment rate per 100,000 people for Māori?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that as at 31 May 2024, the per capita imprisonment rate was 539 per 100,000 people who identified to be Māori. I am further advised that as Corrections has relied on total population, Māori and non-Māori figures reported by Stats NZ to answer these questions, a figure can only be provided in relation to the per capita imprisonment rate of Māori people, as a result, a reliable per capita imprisonment rate cannot currently be calculated for New Zealand Europeans.
