39384 (2024). Rt Hon Chris Hipkins to the Associate Minister of Agriculture: Does he stand by the Prime Minister's statement “…reversing the recent ban on live animal exports and actually making sure, and getting it going again is really contingent on making sure we also have the highest standards of animal welfare”, if so, what will the highest standards of animal welfare look like?
Hon Andrew Hoggard: Yes, this Government believes that continuing the trade is possible, while ensuring that any shipments take place with the highest standards that protect the welfare of the animals and uphold our international reputation as a responsible exporter of animals. The Ministry for Primary Industries will be consulting on options to reinstate the trade with the highest standards of animal welfare. The consultation document is being prepared and will be released before September, and I encourage everyone to engage with this consultation process.
