39347 (2025). Hon Kieran McAnulty to the Minister of Housing: How many accessible social / state houses have been cancelled since 27 November 2023, if any, broken down by territorial authority?
Hon Chris Bishop: Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities advises me that it delivers universal design homes that are more liveable for the entire population and easier to adapt to specific accessibility needs. Kāinga Ora has been including elements of universal design in its homes for over 10 years, and these are now embedded in certain typology plans. An accessible home is one which has had modifications undertaken to meet the specific needs of a particular tenant and is funded by Ministry of Social Development, ACC and Health New Zealand. As such Kāinga Ora’s housing build programme does not deliver accessible homes.
