39300 (2024). Hon Dr Duncan Webb to the Minister of Corrections: What is the ratio of people in prison per 100,000 of population in New Zealand?

Hon Mark Mitchell: Corrections manages people on sentences and orders at the direction of the Courts and the New Zealand Parole Board. Corrections does not determine whether a person is sentenced to prison or the length of their sentence. Decisions to grant parole are made by the New Zealand Parole Board, which is an independent statutory body. I am advised that as at 31 May 2024, the overall imprisonment rate was 178 per 100,000 people in New Zealand.
