39272 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many previously closed beds have been or are scheduled to be re-opened, if any, by Prison?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that to provide the number of closed beds that have been re-opened throughout Corrections’ history would amount to manual collation which I am not prepared to ask of my officials for the purposes of this response. I am further advised that 14 previously closed beds at Christchurch Men’s Prison, 112 previously closed beds at Rimutaka Prison, and 59 previously closed beds at the Waikato Women’s Hub (on the grounds of Waikeria Prison) which is operated by Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility, are scheduled to be re-opened.
