39271 (2025). Dr Tracey McLellan to the Minister of Corrections: How many beds considered poor quality have been or are scheduled to be re-opened, if any, by Prison?
Hon Mark Mitchell: I am advised that there are currently 112 beds that meet Corrections' minimum requirements for safely housing prisoners scheduled to be re-opened at Rimutaka Prison and 59 scheduled to be re-opened at the Waikato Women’s Hub (on the grounds of Waikeria Prison), which is operated by Auckland Region Women’s Corrections Facility. The reopening of these beds are in order to support operational capacity. The Member's question asks for historical information, the gathering of which, including the staff time and resource involved, I do not consider to be in the public interest.
