38905 (2024). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: How, if at all, is it determined that a home visit is necessary, by either Education Review Office or a Local Office of the Ministry of Education, of a home schooling whānau?

Hon Erica Stanford: Under sections 463 and 466 of the Education and Training Act 2020 the Education Review Office’s (ERO) Chief Review Officer can conduct reviews of home school programmes. Such reviews are undertaken if ERO holds concerns about the quality of the child’s education. I am advised that a home visit to a home schooling whānau may be requested by a local office of the Ministry of Education in instances where a home education exemption application does not provide sufficient information to satisfy regional Ministry staff that the child will be taught as regularly as and as well as in a regular school.
