38766 (2025). Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan to the Minister of Education: What evidence, if any, has the Minister received that shows that the “greatest impact for mathematics” for Māori students is Structured Mathematics?

Hon Erica Stanford: National achievement data shows that Māori and Pacific students are both overrepresented among lower achievers and underrepresented among higher achievers. The Royal Society Te Apārangi developed a synthesis of New Zealand and international evidence on the teaching of mathematics. Based on this evidence, the report’s recommendations to address underachievement, including for Māori and Pacific students, include: • developing a clear sequence of learning to clarify what ākonga | students need to be given the opportunity to learn at each year level • providing teachers with evidence-based professional learning about maths teaching. The structured approach to maths delivers on both recommendations.
