38737 (2025). Hon Ginny Andersen to the Minister of Police: What is the average 50th and 90th percentile response time for each of the Canterbury Districts, broken down between January 2024 to date?

Hon Mark Mitchell: I refer the Member to the attached table which provides the 50th and 90th percentile of response times to emergency, events broken by urban/ rural emergency service zones and Police areas, within the Canterbury District between 1 January 2024 and 11 August 2025. Response times are dynamic and are affected by a range of factors such as the number of staff available, population density, and types of calls for service, the event’s distance from an available unit, as well as other events and seasonal factors (including access issues during flooding events). Response time standards are set at a national level. However, in some areas, factors such as the travel time and coverage may mean that meeting these standards is not feasible. Police will always prioritise and attend the jobs where people’s lives or safety is in danger. Policing by its very nature requires constant prioritisation of resources to respond to emergency demand, which is unpredictable and has peaks and troughs.
