38709 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries: What action, if any, is the Government taking to avoid Māui dolphin entanglements in the Waikato River?
Hon Shane Jones: Commercial and recreational set netting prohibitions are in place from the coast upstream to the Port Waikato wharf in the Waikato River to manage fishing impacts on dolphins in the river and reduce the risk of set nets being lost, floating out to sea, and posing a risk of entanglement to dolphins in the area. Trawling and drift netting are also prohibited anywhere in the river.
