38623 (2025). Teanau Tuiono to the Prime Minister: Is the Minister or any member of their office aware that the FBI stationed in Wellington includes coverage of the Cook Islands and if so, are they aware of any operations taking place there?

I was advised that the FBI were opening a dedicated law enforcement attaché office in Wellington on 24 July 2025. While the FBI has stationed personnel in New Zealand for several years, establishing a full Legat position in the country will strengthen and enhance the longstanding cooperation with a key Five Eyes partner in the southwestern Pacific region. Noting that it is common practice for countries, including New Zealand, to deploy law enforcement personnel as part of their offshore diplomatic networks.
