38622 (2024). Tangi Utikere to the Minister of Transport: What long-term plans, if any, are in place to ensure the sustainability and continuous improvement of public transport services in New Zealand?
Hon Simeon Brown: Government co-funds public transport alongside local government. Regional councils, Invercargill City Council, and Auckland Transport are responsible for public transport planning and set out public transport strategies in their regional land transport plans. As set out in the GPS, Government’s priority is to enhance the sustainability and continuous improvement of public transport by getting more value for the money we invest and stretching each public dollar further. This involves increasing private share funding sources, developing new ways to fund major projects, and developing new ways of thinking and different delivery models to increase delivery speed.
