38428 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Disability Issues: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?

Hon Louise Upston: I am advised that as a Departmental Agency hosted by Ministry of Social Development (MSD), the Ministry of Disabled People – Whaikaha has adopted MSD’s guidelines on the use of AI. The use of generative AI tools can be used for ideation such as brainstorming or outlining. Ideation does not include developing content for reports, policy advice or ministerial briefings. Any proposed use of AI outside the scope of the staff guidance would need to be assessed in line with both Ministries general information policies and commitments under the Algorithm Charter Data Protection and Use Policy.
