38401 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister responsible for the NZSIS: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?

Hon Judith Collins: As Minister Responsible for the NZSIS, it is not my practice to comment on the capabilities of the NZSIS. Any use of AI by the NZSIS is subject to robust assessment. The agency is alert to the potential benefits and risks associated with AI and is constantly reviewing the way these are addressed. The NZSIS operates in accordance with legislation in terms of how it exercises its powers of intelligence collection and analysis; any use of AI by the agency would occur within the same framework.
