38395 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister for Land Information: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?

Hon Chris Penk: I’ve been advised by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) that they are trialling several AI productivity tools and they have approved a small number of tools for use. The intent is to upskill their people while exploring opportunities to benefit from emerging AI capabilities. LINZ have put in place several measures to manage the risks associated with AI. They have developed an AI policy which includes usage guidelines. They have developed a training module to educate their people on safe and responsible use of AI. They have blocked unapproved AI tools from their network. And they have updated processes for adopting new tools containing AI features or adding AI features to existing tools.
