38390 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Housing: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?
Hon Chris Bishop: I am advised that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is not currently using AI for its work. However, I am also advised that the Ministry is running a small AI pilot using a non-public platform, designed to inform the Ministry as to potential use cases. The Ministry is keeping a watching brief on developments and advice across Government and will be guided by this advice if deploying AI in any of its systems. In August 2023, Kāinga Ora updated the organisation’s Acceptable Use of ICT policy to specifically prohibit the use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and has put controls in place to minimise the accessibility of such tools. Where possible, Kāinga Ora opts out of or disables any default AI functionality on software and services used by Kāinga Ora.
