38378 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Defence: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?

Hon Judith Collins: I am advised that the New Zealand Defence Force provides the digital working environment for its work and operations and that of the Ministry of Defence. The Defence Force is not using AI in its production environments, but is using and trialing AI, and AI enabled tools, for research purposes in data processing, sensor processing and in support of modelling activities. Plans are being developed to manage risks associated with AI by: restricting the use of data in open source AI; educating staff and personnel of the risks and benefits; discussing shared assurance obligations with third party vendors; and, understanding the responsibilities for data labelling assurance and model-management.
