38377 (2024). Francisco Hernandez to the Minister of Customs: How, if at all, are the Minister's departments, if any, currently using AI, and what plans, if any, have been developed to manage the risks associated with AI?
Hon Casey Costello: I am advised that the New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) has not yet authorised the use of any artificial intelligence products or services. Currently, Customs is investigating Microsoft CoPilot which is a suite of generative artificial intelligence tooling within its Microsoft ecosystem, to enhance office productivity. This assessment is still in progress.
I am further advised that Customs is still developing its approach to the safe implementation of artificial intelligence products. This approach aligns with the guidance provided by the Government Chief Digital Officer. As Customs continues its assessment of artificial intelligence technology, additional risk management approaches will be investigated.
